Places to Visit

If you’re looking for places to see during your visit, a good starting place for information is our interactive map, under the Geography section. You can link to it here. More specifically, some of our favorite tourist destinations are listed below. Keep in mind that few places accept credit cards, so you might want to bring some American dollars or travelers’ checks to avoid expensive credit card cash advances. Also, please help us add to the list by e-mailing us your suggestions!

Northern Region

Livingstonia: The mission started by the CCAP church in the highlands near Nyika plateau. You can stay overnight in the original house (and sleep in the antique beds!), tour the mission museum, and eat dinner with the museum’s caretakers. The hike up to the mission is one of the highlights of the trip: a steep uphill climb with many rewarding views, waterfalls, and beautiful fog-swept meadows. http://embangweni.com/livingst.htm

Nkhata Bay: a backpacker favorite. Several hostels offer accommodation right on the lake, and in town the carver’s market offers many hours of diversion, and all the trinkets you can carry. The lake itself features many sheltered inlets, providing perfect relaxation to the sound of water, Bob Marley, and pleasant conversation. Don’t forget the tropical drinks!

Central Region

Dedza Pottery: woodcarvings and batiks are plentiful in Malawi, but Dedza Pottery is a treasured memory among those who’ve lived there. The workshop turns out plates, cups, soup tureens, lamps—just about anything you can dream up—decorated with Malawian Village scenes, Lake Malawi fish, even your own custom pattern! Be sure to arrive with an empty stomach—Shepard’s pie, cheesecake, and even, in season, Christmas pudding are all on the menu! http://www.dedzapottery.com/

Southern Region

Mvuu Lodge: located in Malawi’s premier wildlife refuge, Mvuu offers opportunities to see some of Africa’s most famous animals by jeep, boat, even by door of your tent or tree house! The setting is stunning, and while the camp is not inexpensive, there are several levels of accommodation so that a (short) stay can be fit into most any budget. http://www.mvuulodge.com/

Mua Mission: Want to learn about gule wamkulu? Mua has an entire museum dedicated to it! It also hosts some of the most artistic carvers in the country. Consider an overnight stay—the food is fantastic! http://www.malawiholiday.com/todohere/mission/mua.html
