The primary goal of Friends of Malawi (FOM) is toward the development of Malawi and supporting programs which positively impact Malawians. As part of this mission, FOM awards small grants to development projects throughout the country. All grants must reflect basic elements of sustainable development, follow the criteria set by FOM, and must follow the application guidelines. Since the late 1980's, FOM has been able to award over $75,000 in small grants to a variety of initiatives in numerous different development areas.
Friends of Malawi has been proud to support projects such as:
- Bee keeping training and start-up materials for a bee honey program,
- Lockable medicine cabinets for a health center,
- Shelving for a school library,
- Egg-laying chickens for a local income-generating activity, and
- Sustainable agriculture (permaculture) projects.
Of course, numerous other projects in many other areas have been funded. A summary of some projects can be found here .
